This is the earliest photo so far traced of Ernestina and her family and shows all three of the Tobing family women - Ernestina, Tianur and Vera - whose textiles feature in this web collection. The photo was probably taken in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra, where Ernestina and Theodorik made their family home. They originally moved to the town at the time of, or just after, their marriage in the second decade of the 20th centrury. Theodorik was appointed Manteri Blasting (Chief tax collector) for the Simalungun district by the Netherlands colonial goverment.
