The Batak

[under construction]

The traditional homeland of the Batak is in the largely mountainous region of North Sumatra on the Island of Sumatra in Indonesia. The Batak consist of six ethnic groups and can be divided into three main linguistic groups which have a common origin in the past but are independent languages. These main linguistic groups are the Mandailing, Angkola and Toba in the south, the Pakpak/Dairi and Karo group in the north and the Simulungun in the north-east. Within these linguistic groups are various dialects.
