Hi people, like to share some photos of a (claimed) Tanimbar Island tube sarung that I found in Kupang NTT in 1993. The textile is all handspun cotton thread with all vegetable ( predominantly indigo ) dyes, and is in fantastic & undamaged condition...albeit a little faded ( maybe due to age, but I have no idea of it's exact age or provenance ). It's quite nicely & tightly woven, and fairly thick / heavy...although I have yet to weigh it. The size is 102 cm x 55 cm. I'm no expert but pretty confident that it is from Tanimbar, based on other images I've seen of textiles from there. Regards - Steven.

Dear Bambang,
You can drop the '(claimed)'. There can be little doubt that this is a Tanimbar sarong. Which island it is from is hard to say as the styles travel within the archipelago. The age is heard to estimate (partly because your photos are not very detailed), but I would estimate it to be from the 1970s or before. If you want to know more about the piece I recommend that you get Van Vuuren's boek on the textiles of Tanimbar. It is by far the best source out there and inexpensive.

Nice piece, enjoy.
Peter
