Hello,

I'm attaching several pictures of three very beautiful and unique items from South Cotabato, Mindanao, Philippines. The first group shows a wonderfully embroidered man's shirt, the second group shows a woman's blouse, and the third group shows an absolutely stunning pair of men's trousers.

I would estimate these to be from the early to mid 20th century. B'laan in design, I have also been advised that these types of garments (especially the men's) would have been seen being worn by datus and other respected elders of the T'boli people, during important gatherings or ceremonies. As the T'boli and B'laan are very close in proximity and certainly met, traded and interacted regularly over the centuries, an overlap in styles for certain garments is to be expected.

I would note that the photos are a bit dark and that the colorful embroidery is bright and bold, along with being extremely intricate.

I hope you enjoy the photos and would be happy to hear your thoughts as to origin, age, etc. Thank you.

Thank you so very much indeed for sharing these very fine abaca textiles. They are stunning! A privilege to be able to see such detail in the photos. I love the colours and overall 'hue' of them and seeing the very precise (cotton?) embroidery against the finely woven and deeply dyed abaca weaving. I appreciate the way that the abaca has been polished and gives a contrast in texture and appearance as a background for the embroidery. I know that abaca is polished after ikat lengths are woven which gives them a special glow; the detail of polishing the woven fibres when they are acting as a background covered in embroidery reinforces the whole sense of care and tremendous patience and concentration which was expended on making this clothing.

I don't have the expertise to make any helpful comments on them but certainly wanted to say 'thanks for sharing' which is what this forum is all about! I have certainly 'enjoyed' them!
