Another favorite piece is this Shahsavan Korjin (saddlebag) face from the Khamesh.

Very few of these incredible, sumack weavings have survived. Of those that have, the majority are like this piece; faces of these amazing expressions cut away from the whole. Complete, intact korjin from the Shahsavan are very rare. What bothers me most is that means there’s no way to know if this was a face from a single bag or an orphan from a double.

All of that aside, from my years of life with this piece, none of that really matters. Though it is (just?) a face, this piece transcends any transgressions. Every time I look at it, both the palette and the pattern command my gaze. When I touch it, it is so soft, it still makes me winch. This was surely made from only underbelly wool.

Throughout the hearding tribes of Caucasia and deep into Iran, the dye lots and mordents that set them, in my opinion, yet rank among the best we humans have ever achieved, and this exquisite example only emulates that thesis.

More images to follow in this thread, and much more to follow when I have the time!

Two more images showing the front and back of a corner. Note how minor the fading is (over its 150+ years of life!!) of its well set, natural dyes.
