I received in today information on weekend Workshops with Jacqui Carey in 2010. Jacqui authored the excellent book 'Chinese Braid Embroidery' (see earlier thread on the Books section of the forum http://www.tribaltextiles.info/communit ... php?t=1065)

I see with interest that, amongst the various workshops, Jacqui is offering a workshop on this topic:

Chinese Braid Embroidery
12th - 13th June 2010

Chinese braid embroidery is a traditional technique that is in danger of ‘skill decay’. The workshop intends to shed some light onto this exquisite textile craft in the hope that an appreciation of the textiles can be found through a better understanding of the skills involved. Students will start by looking at the historical and cultural background of the technique with a 'hands-on' study of some traditional pieces. This introductory course will continue by covering the basic techniques required for this style of braiding, and includes the following:

1) Equipment - what, why and how.
2) Warp threads - what, why and how.
3) Working techniques - how to braid and improve ones style.
4) Braiding sequences - a variety of different structured braids and numerous patterns.
5) Using braids for embroidery.

All courses run from 10 am till 4 pm each day. Tea, coffee and a light lunch can be provided.
The cost of each weekend is £80, with a deposit of £40 required to secure your place.
The local tourist office brochure "Where to stay & where to eat" is available, offering a range of facilities within Ottery and the surrounding countryside.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Jacqui.
