I have just received an email from forum member Ann Goodman which contained a question/mystery which she hopes the forum can help solve and three photos of the item in question which I attach below.
Quote:
"I am hoping that the Forum will be able to help me with a puzzling necklace in my collection. This is a large silver ring with an elaboborate fringe. THe ring is 12" outside diameter and the dragon and pearl motif looks very Han. However, the fringe which extends to the waist is 7.5" - 10" in length and the pressed out repousse designs of bats, butterflies and the like could be from many minority groups. I believe the necklace is made from fine silver. The silver plates are very thin and flexible but not brittle. Having worked in fine silver in my past, it feels like the real thing to me. I believe the necklace to be Zhuang, cf. Clothes and Ornaments of Yunnan Ethnic Groups. p. 45. I would be most appreciative of comments from The Forum."

Here's hoping that someone is able to help Ann.

Although various Miao communities will share some of their ceremonial necklace styles, the one Ann has does seem to come from Shidong Township in Guizhou. I purchased a fine silver (99% pure silver) one from a master silversmith in Tanglong Village which is a short distance along the river from Shidong. All Miao women would prefer to have fine silver neckpieces, but work is also done in nickel silver. My piece was sold at the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market so I don't have any closeup photos. The other photo is of the women dancing during the Dragon Boat Festival in June 06. Notice their wonderful silk embroidered jackets.
