Monique-
Here in Thailand a lot of people use an upended basket to display tribal hats.

If, however, you have a large collection, you might want to look for someone who can do simple welding and have some custom hatstands made. We had them made in the past with custom-fitted structures for the hat, proportional rod, and heavy 1/4" metal base; all painted black. I'll try to get some photos to show you. It really makes a difference, especially for certain pieces.

Hi again,

I have found the perfect way to display my hats for a reasonable price!

In my “double Dutch” I will try to explain it to you:

You need: 1 persplex (plexi glass) stand (bought in a shop specialised in
things to decorate a shop), this was already made and costs
about €3,00 (available in different heights 10, 15, 20, 25 cm)
¬Ω a foam ball (diameter 12 cm) (if the hat is round) or bigger
if needed
1 cardboard circle (diameter 12 cm)or bigger if
needed
wadding (used in patchwork)
The stand consists of two squares, one at the bottum, one at the top; in between a plexi glass stick.
In the upper square I have made a hole on each side, to attach the cardboard with thread. On the cardboard you glue the ¬Ω foam ball and this half ball is completely covered with the wadding to prevent the hat from sliding down the ball. If somebody needs a detailed description you can contact me!
Bye bye !

Greetings Monique
Just paging through your post on hat displays and was excited to see one of your hats posted on December 13th. The hat in question is in the right foreground of image dscn2534_.jpg
Do you have any information on this hat? It appears to be showing the front of the hat? I have a feeling that this is a Dong piece with the nine metallic circular suns attached on the front. I think I can make out metallic circular pieces on the hat over what would cover the ears when the hat is worn? These usually have a hammered image bearing similarities to the Dong drum motifs shown elsewhere on the forum. Are there any suspended sounding charms or other attachments to these? Is the back flap covered with embroidery too? Oftentimes there is a material band that extends from the red "ears" located on the side/top of the hat that extends around to the back which in turn may then fall as trailing bands at the back - is this the case for this hat?
Thank you for the great suggestion of so elegantly displaying these delightful creations!
Iain

Dear Forum,

I am completely new to this field of collecting.

I have recently returned from traveling in the Yunnan and Ghizou areas of China and I am wondering if anyone on the forum can help me identify which minority group this baby hat comes from? Is it from the Dong? I have seen pictures of similar hats on the forum with similar side circles and fish /bell attachments. I chose this particular hat as I love the grasshopper embroidery.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi Jenni

Welcome to the forum!

A very nice hat with some excellent 'drawing' embroidery! When I look at the hat I do not get a sense of 'Dong' but I could be wrong. The use of auspicious protective animals/insects spreads across many minorities and, of course, the Han where the use probably originated.

I contacted Martin Conlan (Slow Lorris) this morning to see if he was able to identify the hat. Surprisingly, in the midst of Christmas preparations, he spotted the email and responded by return. However, sadly Martin is not able to identify the style of the hat but agrees with me that he does not think that it is Dong. He has in his collection a similar hat with what he thinks is a bat-shaped top to yours. Looking again at the image of your hat I see what he means about the top being bat-shaped. As you may know, in China the bat "fu" is a sign of good luck symbolising a long and happy life.

Don't give up! Someone looking at your images may be able to give you some more information. Meanwhile, thanks for sharing your nice example with us.
