Hi Stef-
I wish I could help you with Bangkok... but if you are coming to Chiang Mai, there are numerous sources for such fabrics. Many hemp products are made by the hilltribe people here in the north, or come from China. South of Chiang Mai, in Chom Thong, there is a thriving community of weavers making handwoven cottons. Handweaving abounds up here, which is why I call it "textile heaven" :-)

Stef

Not sure if you have seen this info on shopping on the main tribaltextiles.info website http://www.tribaltextiles.info/Countrie ... _shops.htm

Things change so make sure you check out by 'phone, email or website before setting out to go to a shop.

Always glad of feedback to do let us know of any good places you find on your trip.

Good luck!

Thanks Susan and Pamela,
Yes from what I've been reading Chiang Mai is the place for textiles. I'll head up that way. Will let you know what I discover.
Stef.

Stef, Haven't been to Bangkok for a few years now and things have probably changed. I went every three months for over 10 years to buy plane tickets as they were a quarter of the price in Japan. In Bangkok I always went first to see Nim and have lunch, from the alley behind the shop, with her at Prayer Gallery. Have known her for over 20 yrs and recommend her shop. If you stop in tell her hi from MAC.

River City used to have a lot of antique textiles and it was a nice ride on a river ferry from where I stayed. Has anyone mentioned the weekend market? Sat. and Sun. ask anyone as it is known by all. There you will find everything under the sun including textiles. It is a fun Saturday! Go at the crack of dawn, as the good stuff sells quick and though things are much cheaper than in shops you need to bargain hard!! That is part of the fun!

Do make the trip up to Chiang Mai as it is a cool relief from Bangkok heat and crowding and you will find textiles from all over. Ah, wish I were headed that way too!!! Have a nice trip :) MAC

Info on Prayer gallery is shown on the Thailand shopping list link I gave above. Yes, there used to be a lot of good galleries in River City. I know that at least one of them, The Golden Triangle, moved and the list shows updated details. I had a notification at Christmas from them so think these details are still 'live'.

If you are up for the Weekend Market at Chautuchak, I suggest you stop by Roi. You will need a map and I can tell you that it is in the handicrafts section. I don't have the card with me at the moment, but the owner and staff are wonderfully helpful and the shop, which was small when I first found her in 1996, has grown to encompass quite an area. She is very knowledgeable in handwoven, natural dye fabrics and there is a good collection of new and antique pieces from all over Thailand as well as Laos. The traditional music is lovely, the ambiance of the shop is great. I almost hate to give away my own little treasure, but it is worth braving the market to visit and I doubt I will return until 2011. Good luck...if you contact me I can look up the address in the market as well as her name and a phone number.

The best place in Bangkok to buy fabric, cloth, textiles and clothing wholesale is the Bobae Market. This bustling street market contains a whole host of shops and stall owners who daily package huge wholesale orders for customers all over the world. And this is the one of the place, that you would find original products of fabric textiles and more.
