Dr. Conway's latest from River Books (Bangkok) is called The Shan; Culture, Art and Crafts and just showed up in the local bookstores. The contents includes: their history, male and female attire, nobility, arts and crafts, trade, plus genealogies and plant dyes.

From the book:
The Shan States are at the crossroads of inland Southeast Asia and for over a thousand years the surrounding super powers, particularly China and Burma, have crossed this territory to wage war, to trade and to influence local politics. Although as this book will show, their presence affected some aspects of local life, the Shan States maintained a distinct culture.

Numerous photos, both in color and historic prints in black and white, accompany the text; a glossary, bibliography and index (yes!) are included. It's hardcover and retails here at 1700Baht (around $45.)

I am grateful to Susan for indicating that this book is now 'out'. It is one that I have been eagerly awaiting. It can, of course, be obtained direct from River Books. I have just tried and am glad to say that, much easier for me, it is available there. Just a few weeks ago there was no sign of it - so, thanks again Susan!
