I thought that I would share with you information on a book which I have recently added to my library. It features excellent photos and information on the Red Dao commune of Ta Phin, Sapa, northern Vietnam.

I saw the book on the website of earlier this year after they had contacted me wanting to exchange links. I ordered the Red Dao Sapa book and a catalogue on the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology which I had been trying to get hold of for some time. Unfortunately the book on the Red Dao was sold out then but I left an order in place. I must say that (who are based in Montreal, Canada) have been very good to deal with all the way through. (Cost of the book US$10.00)

I am very pleased with the book - especially so as I visited what I now believe to be the Ta Phin commune in 1995 - see ... nority.htm
The book has good quality photos - in fact generally good quality printing throughout - and informative text. I have enjoyed reading it from cover to cover. It has a particularly nice slant of quotes from village women (all different ages). The book is the first in a new series to be published by The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology 'Our Craft Traditions'. I look forward to future volumes. For full details of the book see ... ks.htm#ysp

I love the way that Mien/Yao women utilise their turbans as aids to keeping their glasses from falling off their noses - see photo from book cover below. I also have a similar photo from a Mien group near Chiang Rai taken in 1988.

I purchased two extra copies of this book when I was in Vietnam and can sell them for $10 plus postage (from Thailand). Send me a message thru this forum or my website (below).
