I would like to share a few reference books with the forum.

Hmong Textile Design by Anothony Chan, published by Stemmer House Publishers, Inc. 1990, is a good resource identifying the traditional symbolic and modern story cloth designs. The book contains many sketches of the twentieth century from the Norma J. Livo collection.

Hmong Art Tradition and Change by John Michael Kohler Arts Center, 1986, ISBN 0-932718-19-1 is an excellent book. I would highly reccomend it. The book has many photographs of traditional and acculturated textiles with excellent provenance of pieces. Ornamentation, music, language and handicrafts of daily use are also represented. My favorite part of the book is Hmong Traditional Artists: Biographical Notes. This section clearly identifies specific artists backgrounds, styles, methods origins, etc.

Stories in Thread, Hmong Pictorial Embroidery, a project by Marsha MacDowell, Michigan Traditional Arts Program, Folk Art Division, Michigan State University Museum, 1989. This reference is good if your interest is in acculturated storyclothes. It provides some good background info on hmong traditional textiles. Unfortunately I left my copy out in the rain and many pages have stuck together.

I had a look on Amazon and found that only the first title cited by Rusty is currently available - and very cheaply! "Hmong Textile Design". The other 2 are listed but 'not currently available' but Amazon suggests that you keep checking to see if any copy appears. Pamela
