In the latest edition of the Oxford Asian Textile Group Newsletter, 'Asian Textiles' there is an article mourning the fact that Sheila Paine's collection based on a lifetime of collecting is being broken up by going to auction. Sheila had been trying to get a museum to buy the collection and the supporting ethnographic material but without success. The sales are on 11 April at Christies in London - South Kensington (most of the major pieces), 22 April at Dreweatts, Donnington Priory, Newbury (other good pieces including Yemen, ethnographic material from Makran in Pakistan as well as costume from Eastern Europe) http://www.dnfa.com/auctions.asp?view=s ... 61&avail=0, and 23 April also at Dreweatts (her Research Library). No catalogue available yet according to Dreweatts website. I can't actually find info on the Christies' site about the sale and have emailed them for info. The on-line search engine does not respond to 'Sheila Paine'.

Sorry if this should be in the selling section of the forum but it seemed so relevant to Monique's post. If there were good catalogues available that would be of interest and I am sure that members might be interested in items from Sheila's research library.

I contacted Christies by email to try and find out about the sale of Sheila Paine embroideries and this was their response:

Quote:
Property from Shelia Paine's Estate will be sold on 11 April in the Indian and Islamic Works of Art and Textiles Sale. Her property will be included in Lots 500-600.

Nothing about a catalogue (there is nothing about one against this sale on their website) and ''Sheila Paine's Estate" as if she is deceased! As you will gather from Monique's post above and also her article in the OATG Newsletter, Sheila is very much alive!!!

This morning, together with an invitation to Barbie Campbell Cole & John Gillow's next exhibition I received a card for Sheila Paine's sale at Dreweatts. I share the lovely image with you. Info on the web is a little more updated:

The Sheila Paine Textile Collection
22 April 2008, 10:00 at Donnington Priory

view days
18th April 9.30am - 5.00pm, 19th April 9.00am - 12.30pm, 20th April 10.00am - 2.00pm, 21st April 9.00am - 6.00pm, 22nd April 9.00am - 10.00am

but the catalogue is still not available. The reverse of the card says that there will be both an on-line and hard copy catalogue available. If the catalogue is up to the standard of this item (with the information shown) then the catalogue could be a very useful research tool.

If anyone has any information on where to obtain the hardcopy of the auction catalog, please post! I think it might be hard to obtain over here in the US!
Thanks!

The catalogue for the sale at Christie's South Kensington on 11 Apr is available http://www.christies.com/features/apr08 ... erview.asp to see on-line and order (on-line) hard copy of catalogue. Payment in £, US$ and Euros possible for hard copy of catalogue. There is no mention of items being from Sheila Paine's collection. As my request for info to Christie's had elicited the response "Property from Shelia Paine's Estate will be sold on 11 April in the Indian and Islamic Works of Art and Textiles Sale. Her property will be included in Lots 500-600" I went to the last lot - 531 and worked backwards. There is good informative info for several items with photos.

As of today Dreweatts' website still says that the catalogue (for sale on 22 Apr) is not available but I will keep checking.

I received my copy of the Christie's catalogue of their Indian and Islamic Works of Art and Textiles on 11 April (Shawls and Suzanis at a sale today, 8 April). There seem to be more items in the catalogue from Sheila Paine's collection - between 500-600 than shown on-line. This section starts with a small piece about Sheila. Some good although quite small photos and minimal to very informative text depending on catalogue item.

Today the catalogue of the Dreweatts' sale is available in pdf from this page http://www.dnfa.com/auctions.asp?view=s ... 61&avail=0, the photos are low grade images. I need to investigate further to find out about a hard-copy catalogue. 63 pages in the pdf are Sheila's items. Lots of text plus links to her own life - a personal survey of it all.

I received this morning a hard copy of the Dreweatts catalogue which contains the info on the sale of The Sheila Paine Embroidery Collection on 22 Apr 08. I asked via email for info on ordering it securely on-line but was asked to telephone which I did. I received a card back on ordering catalogues which can be paid for by (£) cheque, credit or debit card. Overseas enquiries re catalogues should go to the relevant saleroom - in this case donnington@dnfa.com They have a fax 44 (0) 1635 553 599 which would assist with security for payment by card. I note that inside the catalogue it gives prices for this catalogue of £10 (£12, $22, Euro 18 by post).

The catalogue is very nice with good photos, information and personal comments from Sheila (which I particularly like) - all as seen in the pdf but with much better quality photos.

Looking at my old edition of Sheila Paine's book 'Embroidered Textiles: Traditional Patterns from Five Continents with a worldwide guide to identification' published in 1990 many of the textiles (and info) are the same.

In the Christie's catalogue it said of Sheila's collection that
Quote:
"This is the first tranche, with a second to come in the autumn in Paris."
No reference to the sale at Dreweatts. I assume that the sale in Paris will be at Christie's Paris?
