Of interest to anyone collecting silks from Cambodia, this interesting new book by Gillian Green has very recently been published by River Books in Bangkok. It has more detail and more recent research about the genre of silks that are used ceremonially than her previous book, and includes both the narrative Khmer 'hol' silks called 'pidan', and 'sampot chawng kbun' used for dressing 'naaks'/new ordinands as well as for weddings and funerals. It also includes some amazing 'kiet', or tie-dyed, silk pictorial pieces, one of which is on the cover. These textiles are the epitome of Cambodian textile art, which is considered one of their highest forms of art. (Note that 'hol' is the Cambodian term for weft ikat.)
