Had a look at the link for the publication but the only way to contact the store is by phone and it says they only ship within the USA. How are we suppose to get a copy of the catalog? Wait for a while and it will be for sale on ebay at half the price and with international shipping. If they want to sell a lot of catalogs they need a better sales system. What to do?

I am afraid that I didn't follow through for availability of the publication "Textiles of Timor, Island in the Woven Sea" when I originally posted as I was trying to resist the temptation to purchase yet another textile book!

Since reading your post my interest has been piqued! I have been amazed not to find the publication anywhere currently online. I would have expected it to be on Amazon and perhaps Abe Books but no trace at all!

I have followed through from the Publications section of the Fowler Museum website and see that their publications are distributed via University of Washington Press. At UWP they advise trying to purchase from a bookseller but, reluctantly, give some contacts for different regions around the world: http://www.washington.edu/uwpress/books ... order.html There is an email address for your region, MAC, at University of Hawaii. I have sent off an email to Combined Academic Publishers (which I found via their website) to ask if they can supply a copy of the book and the cost for so doing. It remains to be seen if I get any response positive or otherwise!

The total American parochialism about the world outside N American shown by the Fowler Museum is something I have all too frequently encountered before. Probably least said about that the better!!!

I wonder if very few copies of the publication were printed? We need to keep a watching brief on-line to see if it does turn up on Amazon. There is clearly more to this than meets the eye!

On the exhibition information page on the Fowler website there is a video on the process of making textiles in Marobo. It includes spinning cotton thread; tying ikat; a considerable amount about dyeing - yellow, red, indigo and black; and then weaving. I am going to embed the video here for forum members to share:

Just to report that I managed to source a copy of "Textiles of Timor, Island in the Woven Sea" - it arrived in the mail today and, from an initial leaf through from cover to cover, it looks very interesting indeed with contributions from several 'names' that I recognise. Excellent photography. I am eager to get down to reading it!

I managed to get my copy from http://www.rugbooks.com/ but it seems to be the only one they had available. I have put in a plea for thought to further copies for frustrated international readers unable to get any communication on the book from the Fowler! [A warning for those who go to the Rugbooks website: it could be severely injurious to your bank balance as they have an excellent list of textile books - all too tempting!]

MAC drew my attention to a video on weaving in West Timor which he had found on Facebook. This had originally been produced by the UCLA Fowler Museum (possibly in connection with the above referenced exhibition). Very interesting to see how a traditional weaving style has been taken and developed by the actions of one woman - Margareta Taub Kapitan - triggered by a new form of local government introduced in the 1960s by the Indonesian government. Based within an existing weaving tradition yet with a fresh direction which must have been how weaving styles developed in the past.
