I received an email of information from Edith Cheung (whom you may be aware of re Cloth Haven in Hong Kong). It seems that Edith has been very busy with a project in Shanghai. She has been asked by private owners to promote textiles, with a focus on Chinese Tradition, in a canal town outside of Shanghai. This is the Jinze Arts Centre. For the past two years, she has been travelling there regularly, to build the Textile Division. In very simple words, this is Cloth Haven, embracing textiles, in a much bigger way.

While the project is still being built, the library, archive and weaving workshop will be ready to move in soon. They would like to call for a first group of participants to join them in April for a test run workshop. There are many documents to write to explain about this massive project, but Edith has mailed out on her Cloth Haven mailing list some information for people to plan ahead. In future they will invite international professionals to teach a variety of textile workshops, but as the Director of the Textile Division, Edith is taking the lead to teach the first one.

Many people will know of Edith Cheung through her workshops on weaving and dyeing, and her style of teaching through actual sample references. She now has more support: an archive of over 5000 pieces of Chinese textiles, Guizhou Miao weavers on site, in a tranquil historical canal town. Learning to weave on the loom, but at the same time taking in a variety of inspirations. On site meals and accommodation, so participants can indulge in textiles all day long.

Edith wants to gather a variety of participants: local community, Hong Kong and other parts of the world: those who shares a passion for crafts and culture. For overseas participants, it would be a great start for a textile trip in China, before continuing on to Shanghai, Suzhou , Hangzhou for a Chinese textile experience.

The documents attached are:
1.one pdf on general introduction of Jinze
2.one pdf on workshop description
3.two word doc on application, one english, one Chinese

Edith says to please submit the application form for a panel selection, you will be informed before payment is required through paypal or bank transfers.

If I was not so tied to home by my caring duties I would be seriously considering contacting Edith and trying to participate as it sounds an interesting opportunity.

[A Google search for Jinze Arts Centre brings up some interesting information and images.]

Edith gives her Hong Kong Cloth Haven contact details:
