In the spirit of widening the geographic vista of the forum Sandie Shamis has drawn my attention to a 'Mayan Textile Art Exhibition' - see http://www.presidio.gov/Visiting/Events/Mayan.htm - (October 22, 2004 to January 16, 2005) which is a complimentary exhibition to 'Courtly Art of the Ancient Maya' - see http://www.thinker.org/legion/exhibitio ... ionkey=332 (4 September 2004 —2 January 2005)

To quote Sandie:
Quote:
There's a wonderful exhibit of Mayan "courtly treasures" at the Legion of Honor (SF); of greater interest is a major exhibit of Mayan textiles at another site.

Sponsored by the Mexican government, it consists of an historical perspective, mainly of Mayans in Chiapass, and mainly their exquisitely embroidered and woven "huipols"...the large blouses worn by a mainly Mayan Indian group, and now fetching mucho dollars.

I hope I never have to decide the difference between Mayan textiles, and SEAsian. The shapes and colors are so familiar, it's breathtaking. No silk, use of wool and homespun cotton-are the only clues.

Sounds excellent and the 'tasters' on the web make me want to go - shame (from my point of view) about the location!!
