I visited the Horniman Museum today both to visit the Woven Blosoms exhibition as well as to listen to the talk by Genevieve Duggan collector of the textiles in the exhibition. Genevieve is the author of 'Ikats of Savu: Women Weaving History in Eastern Indonesia' published in 2001 by White Lotus as the first volume in the Studies in Material Cultures of Southeast Asia series edited by Dr Michael Howard.

The May-June 2004 (issue 134) of Hali Magazine includes an article by Genevieve Duggan 'Woven Blossoms, Seeds of History: Ikats of Savu as Time Markers' to coincide with the exhibition. The the material in the article was core to her talk to us today. '...Savunese woven patterns can be directly linked to specific female ancestries and groups in the island's culture, enabling dates to be assigned to motifs with relative ease.'

The exhibition is quite small but well displayed with helpful comments. The textiles were all commissioned by the Museum and woven using traditional dyes, designs and methods. As Genevieve says in the Hali article:
Quote:
Weavers in Ledetadu are still able to make replicas of the pieces in their ancestress' heirloom basket. These new textiles are identical to those woven in the past, have the same meaning and carry the same message. Ideally heirloom pieces should be kept by the Savunese in their ritual houses, while private collectors and museums can commission identical pieces. This was the option chosen by the Horniman Museum in building its collection of Savunese weavings, and could serve as a model for other collectors to follow.
We were fortunate at the talk to be able to see some Savu textiles in Genevieve's own collection and were invited to handle them. (Both the book and Hali magazine were available in the Museum shop.)

In August this year it is planned for a couple of weavers, a musician and possibly some dancers to come over to the Horniman. There will be workshops and open demonstrations. I have been impressed by the Horniman Museum on both my visits to it. It is very much integrated into the local community and has a feeling of vitality so often missing at museums. They have just finished cataloguing their textile (non-clothing) collection and will be working to have this accessible via the internet. They hope to be able to catalogue their clothing textiles in the future.

'The Woven Blossoms: Textiles from Savu, Indonesia' exhibit will be on show at the Horniman Museum until 20 February 2005. (I gather that the Horniman's next textile exhibition will feature African textiles from their collection.)

There is an exhibition of Historical Savunese culture and weavings 'Blossoms of the Palm, Seeds of History' on display in Jakarta, Indonesia in the former National Archives from 22 July to 4 August 2004.
