After much silence from my side I am happy to share that an exhibition, entitled "Festival Threads - a celebration of Chinese Ethnic Minority design", displaying some 250 pieces from my collection will be exhibted at the SASOL US Art Museum, Stellenbosch, South Africa from 1st July - 29 August 2009.
Incorporating festival jackets, skirts, aprons, baby carriers, hats, jewelery and blankets this exhibition brings selections from the Miao, Dong, Yi, Shui, Yao, Zhuang, Wa and Raojia groups and promises to be a feast for the eyes!

Hi Iain-
Nice to hear that your collection will be getting a good showing! Congratulations! It's a lot of work, but quite rewarding in the sharing of information and passion. I only wish that I could attend and enjoy seeing your pieces in the 'flesh', so to speak.

If a website, or catalog is available, please let us know.

Chok dee/good luck!

Hi Iain,

250 pieces! Sounds like a true feast. I hope that you will send pictures of your display when it is mounted. Good luck with the final steps.

Iain

Great to hear from you!

What a fantastic exhibition! You must have been very pleased with it. Beautifully staged and the textiles look wonderful. Certainly a great collection. The images just need annotating with which Miao group's clothing is being shown to be quite a 'who wore what'.

I do like it when an old thread is revived.

I am afraid that, these days, former forum members have all abandoned the forum in favour of the ease of Facebook - although there the ability to pop back into a post and add to it at any time in the future is just not there.

Thanks for your loyalty, Iain.

I hope that life is treating you well?

Best,

I, too, enjoyed this post. Beautiful photographs, beautiful textiles.

I feel very keenly the sadness in Pamela's sentence about people deserting to Facebook. It feels so similar to shops closing down, the nicest shops!!! because of competition with on-line sales.

I am probably considered one of those 'deserters' -- although I only do it so that I can share my textile knowledge with the Batak people. That is my priority. They don't know about their own textile traditions anymore and I try to encourage and support their interest. I write, therefore, in Indonesian -- which I wouldn't be able to do on this Forum, which is more oriented to the outsider, the collector, the aficionado and the dealer.

I wonder if it would be useful to start a thread in which people discuss how this forum is useful to them? So that the strengths of the forum can be emphasized. Does that make sense? I certainly agree with Pamela that a huge strength is having threads that can be re-visited. The forum is also a "well-managed" environment with high-quality posts; no 'crap' has to be filtered out. Very pleasant and dignified. But Pamela is also right that there is a certain ease to Facebook.

Thank you so much for all the valuable information we get on the forum.
I have a collection of Minority textiles and am always searching for information. On Ian's latest post found a Yi "wedding attire" similar to one I have in my collection. I have found out that it comes from the Quibei area in South Yunnan but how old can it be? It is made out of hemp or fire-weed. I made a trip to the area some months ago and in the Kunming museum there was a similar garment but but the caption didn't give any information.
Thank you all for your help and long life to tribal textiles. info!!!
Cecilie

Cecilie

Lovely to hear from you and thank you very much for your kind words about the forum. I am so pleased that you find it useful.

It is so difficult to tell the age of textiles. Sometimes it is possible if the dye colours or decoration is very similar to other textiles where the date is know. For me provenance is very important but very, very illusive! It was what led me to collect what, eventually, became 18 textiles from one Toba Batak family and research their family because, by chance, one of the family contacted another forum member - who contacted me - when trying to sell some of the textiles on behalf of her mother via email and some terrible images. [see my Vera Tobing Collection.]

Hi Cecilie,
I hope that this helps - the exhibited Yi textiles shown in the images below were collected in the late 1930's from within what is referred to as Luxi County in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province. The back apron - not visible in the standing mannequin - I obtained in 2007 from a collection made in 1983 and demonstrates equal beauty and skill.
