This site may be of interest. Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection "The only law firm in Southeast Asia with a collection of textiles". We should ask the Curator to join our Forum. Best regards, Richard http://www.tillekeandgibbins.com/textil ... ailand.htm

I have just returned from a brief visit to Bangkok during which, thanks to the kindness of the curator of the Museum, I was able to see a few of the Tilleke & Gibbins textile collection in storage and the textiles on display in one of T&G's two offices in Bangkok. The textile collection is housed in the T&G north office in the Tonson building in Soi Tonson. See http://www.tillekeandgibbins.com/Office ... ap_bkk.htm for maps in both Thai (for the taxi) and English.

To anyone intending visiting the collection I would strongly advise contacting the curator, Ms Wipawee Tiyawes ( wipawee@tillekeandgibbins.com ), in advance to make sure that she is available when you want to visit. I left if very late to do this and Wipawee was at an all-day seminar on my only day to see the collection. Despite this she very kindly came back to the office after the seminar and I managed an hour's viewing before rushing to the airport to catch my flight home. The collection is well catalogued both via photos on file and an index on computer linking to the relevant storage tray. The collection 'is comprised of both typical and rare textiles of the Tai, an ethnolinguistic group found in regions of Thailand, Laos, northern Vietnam, southern China and Myanmar (Burma). The collection also includes pieces made by Khmer, Burmese ethnic groups, Vietnamese ethnic minorities, and hilltribes'. The collection has more than 1,000 pieces, displayed in rotation and is still growing.

I enjoyed the display in the offices which gave a good opportunity to see interesting items well displayed. Another time I would plan carefully what I would like to see from storage checking in advance what is available and giving Wipawee a chance to organise the visit.

I hope that Wipawee will join our forum and share her considerable knowledge with us.
