I have been sent info by Brian and Jeanee Linden on a new cultural centre in Yunnan and an upcoming textile tour. I am a bit hesitant to post as I have no personal knowledge of the people involved and would have much prefer that the Lindens had joined the forum and then posted. However, it could be something that forum members might be interested in.

The cultural centre is
Quote:
"The Linden Centre, Xi Lin Yuan, is a unique and elegant cultural retreat nestled in a renowned and pristine mountain village in China's most scenic region, Yunnan, the Land South of the Clouds."
I have been given a website address which was supposed to be going live this week (and says on the temporary site that it was going live in May...) and is still at the time of posting a temporary site: http://www.lindens.cn/ now live!

Apparently there is a textile tour to Yunnan led by Professor Karon Winzenz:
Quote:
(Karon Winzenz, former art professor at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay with 30 years experience in teaching traditional textile techniques as well as being a successful textile artist and museum curator. Karon has two Master's- in Art History and Studio Art- and will be a valuable resource and hands on leader so that you may understand and apply these centuries old artisan traditions. )
Quote:
"Our Centre is the first of its kind in China. We worked over four years with the local community to gain access to the Nationally-protected relic (our building is protected at the same level as the Forbidden City and Great Wall). The Centre has been carefully restored to preserve its dynastic elegance while incorporating the finest 21st century comforts.

Karon's textile program will enable all visitors to travel to timeless villages and interact with local weavers. We will provide daily historical and technical lectures to ensure that each site visit will enable guests to immediately apply the lessons learned at the Centre. Karon will keep participants challenged with daily projects which can be shared during dinners and wine tasting each night overlooking the 14,000 foot mountains and Erhai Lake.

Collectors will also have a chance to purchase rare textiles from the Miao, Bai, Yi and Naxi ethnic tribes. The Centre will host local weavers and collectors who will sell their works in our courtyards. We will help negotiate the best prices and will provide guests with book sources that will allow everyone to grow their knowledge of the textiles upon return to the U.S.

Door County's Peninsula Art School will be hosting a large exhibition of Qing Dynasty textiles from the ethnic regions of China in August. The exhibition will be made up of our personal collection of textiles that we have gathered over the last 25 years in Asia. I will send you a press release directly from the PAS once it is ready.

Please review the itinerary and brochure and contact us with any questions. We have limited the travel on this next trip to Yunnan. We lead a group of 35 to southern Guizhou in April and had many challenges due to the lack of facilities in some of the Dong, Yao and Miao villages. This next tour will be very authentic and comfortable.

I don't propose posting the pdf or centre brochure here but suggest that if anyone is interested they contact lindensgallery@gmail.com or, now the website is live, follow the link to the itinerary page for the trip http://www.lindens.cn/en/page/11/ A pdf brochure can also be downloaded from the website.

Note reference to an upcoming Chinese Ethnic Textile show in Door County, Wisconsin.
