Just outside Siem Reap is a place where they teach cambodian weaving to village girls as a way they can earn extra income, and teach others, when they go home.

I visited when I was there and found it fascinating as they do the whole process, from raising the silk worms, spinning the silk, dying it and weaving it. A lot of it is done in the ikat method. They also weave large lengths of silk (by hand) for monks to wear.

One thing I hadn't realised before I did further reading was that the traditional method of weaving in Cambodia is via the twill method where you end up with one shiny side of the fabric and one dull side. This is one way to distinguish Cambodian textiles from others woven in the region.

I've since heard there are other weaving studios in the area you can visit as well so its worth doing some research before you leave home if you want to see the local textiles (not many old ones available. They were mostly destroyed in the civil war or taken out of the country with refugees).
