Dear group,

this may be an unusual question; but as a museum curator I occasionally have to valuate object from our collections (i.e. determine their aproximate monetary value) for insurance purposes or in order to isse a tax-deductible donation receipt to the donor of the object; in this case a collection of high quality Javanese and Balinese batiks from the 1950s-1960s.

Would anybody be able to point out any references such as auction catalogues, illustrated catalogues or pricelists from specialised galleries or the like that could give me an idea of the pricerange currently paid by collectors for such objects?

Thank you very much for any assistance!

Georg

I had a look on Christies website http://www.christies.com/ If you go to the magnifying link at the top of the page you can search current lots but there is also a link to past lots. I put in Balinese textiles and I did get some returns with prices. I think they make a practice of keeping results of auctions on their website to encourage future sellers. Christies does offer textile sales now and then.

I would think that auction houses in the Netherlands would have sold a considerable number of Indonesian textiles. Sadly I don't know the names of any nor if they keep info available to be accessed. Perhaps some of our other members can help you. Just doing a Google search might help. I did 'Dutch auction houses Indonesian textiles' and got some returns including Bonhams Amsterdam which had some textiles with prices from past sales.

Good luck!
