Here are a few more pieces I picked up recently. I know there was a long thread earlier about batik quilt covers http://www.tribaltextiles.info/communit ... .php?t=257. Here are some that are done with a paste resist. For other examples see this thread http://www.tribaltextiles.info/communit ... php?t=1096

I have very little information on these textiles, except I was told when I bought them that they are from an unspecified Miao group living in Hunan. Again, I'm not sure about the attribution, so if anyone has any information on these, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Another one . . .

This one seems to have had an extra panel added to it.

Very striking. I presume that these paste resist were made with stencils? I know that Gina Corrigan has looked for evidence of stencils/paste resist in Guizhou but never quite found any - just the illusive mention and then nothing when followed up further. Would be great to find the original stencils for these although if they were made of thick card or paper they would not last.

Interesting that you were told that these were made by a Miao group albeit unspecified.

I always find it SO frustrating to look at textiles and think 'who', 'where', 'how'....!

As ever, thanks for sharing!

Pamela,

These were definitely created by stencil, though I have never been fortunate enough to see one.

The second quilt cover seems to point at the stencils being used over a period of time, as the top panel seems to be from a much older quilt. It is heavily faded, and the cotton has a very soft and pleasant feel to it, as compared to the rest of the piece, which is more vibrant and still has some stiffness to it.

Hi,

I am new here and working on a project, I need to know, where could I get these Chinese dragon quilt covers. These are really nice and I need them for my University project.

Well, the covers originate in S W China - Hunan is mentioned in this thread - so you would need a gallery/trader who deals in minority textiles from there. Your signature suggests that you are in Australia. I am afraid that I do not know of any such dealers in Australia.

It is not easy to find such textiles as generally, the skill-set needed to create them is not being passed onto the current generation.

These textiles are definitely 'collectables' and their price would be likely to reflect this.

Best wishes
