Hello everybody..may I ask for ID for this textile please.

I have tried number of people but failed on every occasion..

I know very little about this, other then that it was bought in Istanbul from a dealer of antiques.

the seller didnt speak English much, but he said it was from India,,Mughal Empire period..

I dont have any doubt but I wanted to have confirmation from fellow collectors.

it looks like its made of some hard fiber, jute!? rafia!?

if you know any thing about this origin or age...it will be of great help.

thank you

Sorry for no helpful ID response re your textile.

I am afraid I cannot help. The pattern is very much a basic loom derived one. A similar pattern might be found in the weavings of many countries. The quality of the weave looks very good - firm and even. Somehow the close-up appearance of the fibre - jute, raffia etc. - belies the distance shot where there is a good sheen and it could be silk! I feel that, being of a tough fibre, it was originally designed for quite hard wear. I get a sense of the Middle East. Certainly your place of purchase fits the 'feel' of it from the photos. However, textiles from the Indian sub-continent are so very, very varied across a broad range that it could be from there although I don't tend to think of them woven in such tough fibres.

I hope that someone may happen on this post whilst searching and be able to help. I fear, however, that an 'answer' is not likely soon. Please make sure to share with us any further information which you manage to gather.

Good luck!

Best,

Hi all

From the photos it is hard to tell what we are looking at. What are the dimensions? How about an overall photo of the front and back? An idea of size might help. Also a very close up photo of the threads or fibers might help identify them. It kind of looks like it has some gold metallic threads. It doesn't really look old or worn. The patterns seem to be of a complicated weave. Looking at your photos nothing comes to mind as a match. Are the fibers or thread twisted (spun), single ply or double ply? Sorry I can't be of more help. More info, dimensions and an overall photo might help.

Best regards
