Hi all, in early 1994 I was wandering around the village market in Kokar ( west Alor ) chasing some ikat cloth without much success....until a lady offered me this piece straight off the body of her young daughter !! ....bizarre enough but I jumped at it - and I will always remember just how I got this nice little tube sarung ! It's definitely used and not particularly tightly woven or heavy (maybe just because it had been washed and used regularly ) but not damaged at all. The old lady told me it (or maybe she) originated from Ternate Island and I took her at her word. The tube measures 118 cm x 64 cm. Would I be correct in thinking the bird motifs are chicken or bush hen ? Will always remember the story & treasure this as my first Alor ikat. Regards - Steven.
