Dear all,

As there is a general paucity of information on Tanimbar ikat, with very few pieces shown in literature and/or the internet, I thought I would share with you a sarong bought a few months ago.

A photo in Susan McKinnon, Flags and Half Moons, in Gittinger, To Speak with Cloth, Fig. 8, shows a group of dancing Tanimbarese women, three of them wearing this type of sarong. Details of pattern shown in Van Vuuren, Ikat from Tanimbar, Fig. 47.

Greetings,
Peter

Peter, Nice sarong. Do you know where to get a copy of the book Ikat From Tanimbar? Have looked for it but haven't been able to find a copy. Is it a good book with lots of info and photos? Thanks for posting this piece. Do you know exactly where it was produced?

Best regards

Hi Mac,

Van Vuuren's book is both great and wanting. It has tons of info on individual patterns and their significance, but few larger plates of entire cloths. But as it is pretty much the only book on the island group, I think it can be very valuable. I got my copy through Galerie Lemaire http://www.gallery-lemaire.com/ in Amsterdam. I believe they have more copies. The little I know about the piece is on its webpage: http://ikat.us/ikat_165.php

Kind regards,
Peter
