Hallo friends,

Can anyone identify this ikat sarong with any degree of certainty? I bought it on Adonara in the 1980s, where the seller told me that it came from Pantar. However, it does not of course look like an Adonara sarong, and as far as I know no ikat weaving is/was practiced on Pantar, their textiles usually coming from Alor. By the general look of it I would think of Roti, but it does not look like the average Roti cloth, and certainly not like Ndao. Mac Darrell Serizawa, familiar with the area, tentatively identifies this as an old piece from Roti, probably the Eastern part on account of its stark blues, which are typical for this part of the island, where morinda red is harder to find. But again, his identification is only tentative. So what is it? Could anyone please enlighten me?

Thanks,
Peter ten Hoopen

I was on Pantar recently, and there is weaving there, but the sarongs don't look like this one. I agree with MAC's ID.
