Some interesting headwear I saw being worn while on a visit to S. Yunnan in Dec. Given the distance from the sea, I enquired where the Job's tears on the Pupao Yi hats came from. None of the wearers I spoke to knew except to say that they had had them "for a long time".

If this is already covered in another thread, could someone let me know. Having recently joined I'm not yet up to speed on all the site covers.

Hi Nick

As ever, great photos! The ladies - and their hats - fairly leap out of the computer screen. I particularly like DSC2488.jpg

I can't think of a specific reference to similar hats on the forum except head ware is often shown and comments are made! You mention the Job's tears and the sea. I thought they were seeds and would grow on land. However, the cowrie shells would have originated in the sea. They are often seen as decoration on clothing across Asia and seem to have been a prized traded object for generations and found their way far inland and onto the costume of very many ethnic groups. As I type, if I turn my head, I can see Banjara embroidered textiles decorated with cowrie shells on a several items decorating my room. I always think of the Banjara as a far inland group of people in India.

Thank you so very much for sharing these Yao and Yi headdresses with us.
