Gaddang textiles and adornment are on my most favorite list. I've been fortunate to have put together virtually complete male and female ensembles, with some duplications. The attached ‘tapit’ is the best of those.

Though stylistically this is clearly Gaddang, the red color and the fineness of the weaving seems more in line with the Kalinga. After acquiring it, I was told that this cape was in fact collected from a Gaddang village bordering the Kalinga, and I have often wondered if the “village chieftain” who owned it might have married a Kalinga woman!

This was acquired from a highly trusted source with these collection notes:

"Tight cotton hand-weave in unusual red color with very nice "mata-mata" weave; excellent needlework on piping and horizontal bands, very rich in detail; heavy beadwork on front opening and hem; banded cord with cotton and glass beaded finial extending from neck. Previously owned by the village chieftain and used during very special ceremonies. Collected closer to Kalinga border, dates to the 1940s-1950s, in exceptional condition. W = 18" H = 43 1/2" . From the Pynky Gomez Collection"

Hi Chas:

What a fabulous textile! I have had limited exposure to Philippine textiles but whatever I have seen, I have adored, so thank you for sharing this.
