Hi all, The small island of Sabu (also Savu and Sawu) and the even smaller island of Raijua just off the coast of Sabu, produced some lovely warp ikat dyed textiles. Back in the 80s there were hundreds of Sabunese textiles coming to Bali every month. Many of them were, unfortunately, cut up and resewn into western clothes. However, I'm sure that a lot of them made it out of Bali in one piece and must now reside in collections around the world. Here I would like to present a couple of pieces and hope that other members will also post pieces from their collections.

Best Regards, MAC

I have heard that the rose motif, so popular on Sabu and to some extent on Raijua, was copied from designs on bath towels used by missionaries or Dutch officials. Does anyone else have any info on where the Sabunese got this western motif? This shoulder or hip cloth from Raijua has more traditional motifs, although the 8 pointed star is probably a much earlier patola influence.

Best Regards, MAC

Dear MAC,

I think that you will enjoy the article written by James Fox in the Irene Emery Roundtable on Museum Textiles 1979 proceedings, edited by Mattiebelle Gittinger, entitled Figure Shark and Pattern Crocodile: The foundations of the Textile Traditions of Roti and Ndao pp. 39 - 54. He discusses the use of patola motifs in the region.

Cheers

Sandra, Thanks for reminding me. I got out the book and had another read. Here is another Savu cloth with motifs that probably don't have patola influence. Hope other members will share some of their Savu textiles with us.

Best Regards, MAC
