Hi Vernon,
As a dealer and collector of Pua for more than 35 years, I also like mine clean and crisp! Ha! Actually, stains on Pua reduce their value in the tribal art market, regardless if they are believed to come from blood or food or anything else.

I do recall some dealers in the old days trying to claim that certain types of stains were possibly made from human blood and it is possible that some collectors bought into this, but I don't recall anyone paying more for a Pua because of these stories.

Thanks for publically clearing up that misconception that Pua were used to hold bloody heads...what a mess that would be! Yikes!

Regards,
Mark

Dear Vernon,

It is long after you posted this, but I want to let you know that I find your exposé absolutely wonderful. While debunking a myth you have at the same time provided a truly memorable alternative - history!

Thanks,
Peter
