Hello

There have been some exchanges concerning the Li people from Hainan recently on this forum, and it pushed me to add this post about a betel box I own but which I can't identify the origin (Hainan, Taiwan, other...). I suspect it could be from the Li, and it is covered with motives that appears to my eyes close to textiles motives.

I bought it in Taiwan few years ago through one of my suppliers of Taiwanese aboriginal art. It was presented to me as coming from the Pingpu, an ethnic group in Taiwan, which I doubted from the beginning. But anyway, I liked it.

I keep on looking for its possible origins, even may be from Taiwan, but I didn't find yet any satisfying answer. I showed it to few professional tribal art dealers that can't agree on one origin. Myself, I suspect now, if it is not Pingpu from Taiwan, that it could be from the Li people, in Hainan.

Is it a Li box ? A Pingpu box ? Any other group ? I hope that some of you that have a deep knowledge of many tribal people in South East Asia will be able to provide me with some elements helping identify the origin of this betel box. It is made of wood, and its patina shows a very long use. White and green pigments on the lid appear to be natural. Remnants of red pigments on the main body. Dimensions : 23 x 13,5 x 6 cm.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions, all of them being welcome.

Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,
I was recently offered a similar betel box that was identified as coming from Madura Island. Definitely from Indonesia.

I knew I would finally have an answer
Yes, it appears that my box is coming from Madura, Indonesia.
Thanks, Mark, for providing me with this info and the picture.
