Dear Pamela. For anybody who is interested in North Balinese cloths, there is an on-line book called "Burials, Text and Rituals" Gottinger University, 2008, edited by Brigitta Hauser Schaublin and I Wayan Ardika, which can be downloaded for private or educational use. Especially the chapter on "The Textiles of Sembiran" by Marie-Louise Nabholz- Kartaschoff is interesting, as this is the only research done in this field. Mariah

Very interesting information. However, when I click the link you have posted I am afraid that I only get an error message. Not sure what has gone wrong.

best,

Mariah has now given me the correct web address for the article on Balinese Cloths. I have edited her post above so that it now has the correct internet address - which worked for me! The research can now be downloaded from the web page via a series of pdf files.

thanks for this link - the chapter on textiles is very interesting and a super piece of research - and a good lesson in treating dealer's descriptions with extreme caution!

It has been pointed out to me that my last remark unfairly maligns dealers generally, something I have no wish to do - especially since I am one! (albeit in Tibetan carpets)

Chris,

I think that your comment reinforcing the need to treat dealers' descriptions with caution is very helpful, especially because you are a dealer! Dealers deal with dealers! Even with the best will in the world a dealer can only rely on what he/she is told plus his/her own experience and knowledge. I have bought things from dealers whom I trust to be providing me with information to the best of their ability but which I know to be incorrect. I think this is key, 'incorrect' rather than 'untrue' i.e. true to the best of their belief but not necessarily accurate! Yes, there are the charlatans too, as there are in every walk of life and 'buyer beware' certainly rules!

Best,

I think that what this discussion underlines is the need for all, dealers included, to do their homework. An informed buyer can reduce their risk of making a mistaken buy, and an informed dealer can educate their buyers, as well as reduce their own risk of buying a mistake. I speak as both a dealer and a collector, and have found that much of the fun of both is learning and sharing information.

I applaud the people and institution responsible for putting this book online. It will reach a much larger and appreciative audience by being 'out there'. Terimakasih to all, and especially Mariah for bringing it to our attention.
