Pamela,

It sounds like I will definitely be having to get the Jacqui Carey book!

Looking again at the passage in "Clothing and Ornaments of China's Miao People", the Chinese clearly states that they are talking about "bianxiu" as the technique where the braid is laid flat on the surface, and not as the actual creation of the braid. When talking about creating the braid, another character is used (confusingly also pronounced "bian", but with a different tone).

Also, thank you for posting the link to the "Dragonhead and Needlework" article. It is a fascinating look into the commercialization of embroidery. Although written several years ago, I am sure with the increase of interest in traditional minority crafts both within China and around the world, the commercial aspect is even more relevant today. It would be interesting to explore what part the reproduction of antique textiles plays into all of this.

Susan,

Thank you for sharing your experiences and pictures of your trip to Shidong. It is quite helpful to have a visual reference to the places we have been discussing.

The use of the Huangping fabric in the quilt is also quite interesting. It seems that Haungping fabric is being used all throughout the area then, and not only in commercial pieces.

And for those who have not read the "Dragonheads and Needlework" article, or who are still unclear about the relationship between Taijiang and Taigong, Taijaing is a county located in the Qiandongnan Maio and Dong autonomous prefecture in southeastern Guizhou province. Taigong is a township that serves as the county seat.
