One or two of you on Susan Stem's mailing list may have received an email from her about a new section on her blog and also a new page on the website about the culture of traditional tattoos in NW Thailand. Although not textiles, I feel that tattoos are body dressing as textile clothing is body dressing. They are certainly part of the culture of which textiles form a part. If we can sneak in baskets on the forum I think that we can include tattoos!!!

So, do have a look at Susan's blog (May 2007) for lots of photos. The once-a-year ceremony of 'Wan Wai Kru' occurred earlier this month (May) and Susan was able to witness it at the studio/home of a local tattoo master. Traditional tattoos in Thailand embody Hindu, Buddhist and animist beliefs and are also connected to a special breed of textiles, called 'phaa yan', or yantra cloths, which Susan has been collecting and studying. See the new website page
