Myanmar (Burma): textile related shops

The starting point for the information below was 'The Guide to Asian Textile Collections', Second Edition, which was published in 2000 by the Textile Society of Hong Kong (ISBN 962-86077-1-5). I have not personally visited most of the shops listed and take no responsibility for the accuracy of the comments and details given therein. However, I have been receiving some feedback and adding to the details, including web links when discovered, as information becomes available. (See notation pac for any shops that I have had a chance to visit.)

Please contact me if you have any corrections or comments on the shops listed below and please share information on any new ones you find.

Madame Thair

Madame Thair, No. Edward Street (First Floor), Pabedan Township, Yangon, Myanmar or her home at No. 649, Myakantha Street, 5 1/2 Mile, Pyay Road,Yangon (phone: 951-526140). She has some nice pieces at her home, but feedback is that she can be a little gruff and overpriced

Yoyamay (Tribal Lady)

On the other hand, 'a lovely Chin woman has a small shop under a stairway in the Bogyoke Aung San Market and she is a delight. She is fun to chat with, very knowledgable and takes great pride in Chin textiles especially. She also carries some (newer) Naga pieces and (older) Kachin pieces. If you tell her you want good quality items, she will won't even show you the new stuff'. Sandra Herber picked up some beautiful pieces from her (plates 112, 87/88, 62, 52, 39, 43 in the Howard book) for a good price. Her shop is called Yoyamay (Tribal Lady) 371-72, Central Entrance of the Food Centre, Bogyoke Aung San Market, Yangon.
